ABOUT THE BOOK & THE AUTHOR
1 May 1992. At the age of thirteen, Aida's safe life is shattered by the Balkan war. Forced to flee with her parents, she becomes a refugee moving from village to village to escape the carnage of a brutal conflict. Able to find refuge in Germany with her parents, she is torn between the strict rules and mores of her homeland culture and the liberal, open Western society she finds herself forced to live in. She rebels and destroys the harmony of her once close-knit family, breaking her parents hearts. When her parents return to Bosnia at wars end, Aida further isolates herself by moving to America. Filled with remorse and motivated by a strong determination to turn her life around, bring her family back together, and make amends, she enlists in the U.S. Army and is assigned to a unit in Germany where she is once again reunited with her mother and father. This is the true story of a young womans savage introduction to the real world, the mistakes she makes wrestling with her role in two widely disparate and confusing cultures, and her resilience and sheer determination to save herself and her family. It is a story of grit, will and personal victory against overwhelming odds.
